About Liz

Liz Cowan, BSc Hons Physiotherapist

Get to know Liz and her style of working.

I am a Scot living in England. I joined the physiotherapy profession in 1999 as my second career.

I became a physio because I love working with people, especially children and young people. I started out working in the NHS, gaining experience at Manchester Children’s Hospital and then as a community paediatric physio in Warrington.

I love and support the NHS but in 2014 I became frustrated with what I perceived as a lack of adequate service – I was aware that families wanted much more hands on physiotherapy than the NHS was able to provide.

I moved to the private sector and gained experience of the “business” side of physiotherapy.

Once I felt I had the confidence to step out on my own I formed “Cheshire Children’s Physio”. I still offer the same high quality service that I have done within the NHS and private sector, but with the added benefits to me and my family that come with working for yourself.

I am Bobath trained and the Bobath approach to treatment informs how I work. I offer neuro developmental physiotherapy – working with children and young people who have developmental delay or long term disabilities.

Getting to know the “client” and their family, and finding out what they want to be able to achieve is the most important thing. I try to demonstrate therapeutic handling in a fun way in the home, striving to ensure that the family feel empowered to make physiotherapy part of their day, without having to stop and “do their physio”. For example demonstrating ways to play or dress that ensures the body is active and working, whilst doing an everyday activity.

I mainly work in the client’s own home, so that the family know they can replicate what we have been doing without needing to be in a specialist environment. I may recommend that you buy some basic pieces of equipment such as a gym ball or bench.

I often go into schools or nurseries to work with children with their support staff or carers, to ensure everybody is handling the child in the same way, and is aware of how to enable the child to progress.

I am trained in aquatic therapy and offer sessions in your own pool, or at hired hydrotherapy pools local to you.

I work with children with very mild difficulties, through to children with complex disabilities. I work with verbal and non-verbal clients and am familiar with alternative and augmentative communication strategies such as use of POD books and eye-gaze technology.

I have recently started volunteering at Manchester Frame Running Hub – a community club, focusing on providing an opportunity for people to try frame running and participate recreationally, or if desired, through to more formal competition opportunities.

I am married with two girls, family life is hectic but fun (despite the fact that we are in the teenage stage!) . I am a Christian, this informs how I work and run my business.

In my spare time I enjoy getting out and about with my family and our dog. Golf is the new passion and I would love to join you in golf charity events.
